Transfer Focus: Antoine Griezmann is the perfect man for Paul Pogba at Man United

[ad_pod ]

Man United are in communication with Antoine Griezmann about a potential move to Old Trafford, according to The Independent.

What’s the story?

The Atletico Madrid stand-out is on the verge of an exit from the La Liga side after announcing his intention to leave this summer.

Barcelona was thought to be his destination but this new report from the paper suggests there are doubts on Barca’s end about making a move for the French international.

This paves the way for a sensational United move, with sources telling The Independent that contact has been made with the £135m-rated player about a potential switch to Manchester, with a deal now possible.

Attacking force

There are obvious benefits to adding a player of Griezmann’s quality to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

His 21 goals and 10 assists this season demonstrate he still has the ability to make an impact at the highest level, having been a consistent stellar performer for Atletico over the years.

United are looking for a new blend in attack after difficult seasons for the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

Griezmann has the quality to provide both creativity and the finishing ability to be a real difference maker at Old Trafford, also versatile enough to play in a number of attacking positions.

Pogba-pleaser

The other massive positive of Griezmann’s arrival would be his impact on Paul Pogba’s happiness and form at United. The midfield talent has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this month amidst question marks regarding his happiness at the club.

He has a noted friendship with his international teammate Griezmann, whom he has won a World Cup with in the past.

The addition of the 28-year-old would surely settle Pogba down off the pitch.

On the pitch it would obviously be a great boost to Pogba’s game too, with Griezmann able to play centrally, link up with and feed off the Man United man’s ambitious midfield play.

Leeds United: Letting Lewie Coyle leave this summer would be no loss for Bielsa

With the dust having now settled from what was a roller-coaster of a season at Elland Road for Leeds United, boss Marcelo Bielsa will be looking to make some drastic changes at the club over the coming months.

Having narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last month, it could be argued that by getting rid of some of their deadwood in the summer, the Whites could redirect the funds in a way that sees them strengthen as a team.

Whereas the likes of Lucas Odunston, Joshua Rae and Alex Wollerton have already being released by Bielsa (via the club’s official website), the Argentine may be about to cut ties with another player.

According to Football Insider on May 31st, Leeds are reportedly ready to listen to offers for academy product Lewie Coyle who has only made 15 league appearances since making his debut in 2015.

If this is indeed true, it is fair to say that letting the defender leave this summer would be no great loss to the Whites as in the form of Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson, they already have better options to choose from in his position.

Although he did enjoy a fruitful 2018/19 campaign whilst on loan at Fleetwood Town, Coyle has demonstrated in the past that he is not good enough to compete at Championship level and therefore a permanent move to a third-tier side could be the best thing for his career.

Whereas selling players who have come through the ranks at a club is always subject of great debate to supporters, in this particular case, it is probably the best scenario. With one year left on the £250k-rated ace’s (via Transfermarkt) current deal at Elland Road, this transfer window represents the last opportunity for Leeds to recuperate a fee for the 23-year-old.

What do you think Whites fans? Should Bielsa sell Coyle this summer? Or does the defender deserve another chance to impress next season? Get in touch below.

Clinton Morrison: I would love it if Crystal Palace signed Daniel Sturridge

Right now, not much is really going on at Crystal Palace on the transfer front.

It is, of course, still very early in the transfer window though. Clearly, the south London club have plenty of time to dip into the market to strengthen their squad.

With there obviously being a need for a new striker, hopefully we can expect Roy Hodgson to do just that sooner or later. And when he does, one former Crystal Palace man is urging the former England manager to snap up a certain European champion.

“I’d love my old club Palace to get him [Daniel Sturridge] because I think, in front of goal, he is one of the most natural. For me, I think he’d be a great addition for most Premier League teams outside top three or four. I don’t think he’s money-orientated. He never looks happy on the bench,” Clinton Morrison told talkSPORT (via News Shopper)

Recently released from Liverpool, on a free transfer, Sturridge could be a really clever piece of business for Crystal Palace. You would have to say Morrison is onto something here.

Given his injury record, naturally, there will be some concerns. But after a season where he was regularly available for selection and managed to come up with some big goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the 29-year-old may have finally turned a corner.

And when fit, he is simply better than anything the Eagles currently have in this moment of time. Christian Benteke, for example, looks like a shadow of his former self, managing just one goal in all competitions in the now completed 2018/19 campaign.

With his pace, movement and finishing ability, a fit Sturridge getting regular game time in any starting XI does not drop such a disappointing record in front of goal in any universe, surely?

If Crystal Palace cannot keep hold of Michy Batshuayi, Hodgson undoubtedly needs to bring in a new No.9. And in Sturridge, a great opportunity has been presented to him or any other Premier League side looking to strengthen their attack this summer.

Tottenham Transfer Roundup: 22yo not priority, Connell blow, Trippier looking at Juve

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham have been very busy in the last couple of days, lodging a bid for Tanguy Ndombele and preparing a second one for Giovani Lo Celso. Today’s Spurs transfer roundup includes a cooling of interest in a Belgian midfielder, a blow in the pursuit of an 18-year-old and an update in regards to the future of an international defender.

Tielemans not top priority

According to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws’ Kristof Terreur, Tottenham have cooled their interest in Monaco’s Youri Tielemans. The former Anderlecht man spent the second half of last season on loan at Leicester and, whilst he impressed, the North London outfit have other priorities.

Connell in talks with Celtic

Celtic have moved ahead in the pursuit of Bolton midfielder Luca Connell according to the Sun. Following Bolton’s entry into administration, the 18-year-old can leave the club for training compensation. Tottenham were reported to be interested in the player, but the Scottish club have now opened talks with the Republic of Ireland international. The latest report doesn’t include any update on Spurs’ position.

Trippier interested in Juventus move

IlBiancoNero is reporting that right-back Kieran Trippier is interested in a move to Juventus this summer. Trippier had previously impressed for the side, but a disastrous season has put his future in doubt. Tottenham are reportedly looking for €30m (£26.7m), with Inter Milan and Napoli also interested.

Rangers: Gerrard must not let George Edmundson slip through his fingers

While Steven Gerrard did a relatively good job in his first season which saw them score 82 goals in the Scottish Premiership (their most in three years), clearly more needs to be done.

Obviously, goals aren’t the only thing needed to win you the league but, with the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe in the squad, attention must turn to the defence. To that end, Gerrards’s been eying Oldham Athletic’s young George Edmundson to potentially strengthen his defence, but might face a blow on those hopes. According to Football Insider, Portsmouth and Peterborough have also had their bids accepted for the 21-year-old, potentially setting up a tug-of-war for the promising youngster.

Now considering that Edmundson was a regular for Oldham and helped them keep 15 clean-sheets (stats Transfermarkt) last season, one can see why Gerrard’s apparently so eager in him. Described as an old-fashioned centre-back who loves to tackle, is strong aerially and comfortable on the ball by former Oldham man Lee Croft (via Daily Record), he looks to have the natural tools to help the Light Blues in 2019/20.

With all those qualities, he can potentially fit into Gerrard’s encouraging system really well and form a formidable partnership to secure the Gers’ long-time defensive worries with the commendable Nikola Katic, who also helped Rangers keep 15 clean-sheets. Joe Worral has returned to Nottingham Forest, so winning this potential transfer battle could be a great thing for the future of the club’s rearguard.

Considering that Chris Sutton also reckoned on BT Sports Periscope in May that the 6’3 towering centre-half is a good fit for Rangers, Gerrard’s side must go-for-broke here.

Rangers fans, do you think Edmundson can be a clever signing for the future? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Everton fans don’t think Antonee Robinson should be sold despite £1.9m Wigan bid

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to demand that Antonee Robinson isn’t let go by the club on a permanent basis, after Wigan reportedly submitted a £1.9m bid for the left-back.

The Toffees are said to be considering the offer for Robinson, who spent the entirety of last season on loan with the Latics, but a lot of Everton supporters are keen for him not to be sold.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michael Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

It appears that most of the club’s aithful would rather see him loaned out once again, before returning to Goodison Park and replacing Leighton Baines as back-up to Lucas Digne – the 34-year-old England international has extended his stay on Merseyside to 13 years after signing a new 12-month extension.

Robinson is already a full USA international at the age of just 21, with seven caps for the national team under his belt.

Alex Rae believes Rangers move for Joe Aribo will pay off big

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Rangers star Alex Rae thinks Joe Aribo could become a valuable asset at Ibrox in the coming years, speaking to talkSPORT this week.

What’s he said?

Aribo has still not been officially unveiled as a Rangers player but Steven Gerrard has essentially confirmed he’s signed up for the coming season, excitedly talking about what he will offer the Gers’ midfield.

Rae too believes that Aribo will be a hit at Rangers and reckons that although a low fee has been paid for the player, he could be worth as much as £6m in the future, 20 times the £300,000 compensation fee due to Charlton.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

Speaking to talkSPORT, the 49-year-old said:

“For me, it’s a no-brainer. We see it time after time, where English clubs cherry-pick the best out of Scotland.

“This kid’s obviously done very well for Charlton last year, I think he’s got ten goals. So it was a good return for someone so young.

“Rangers and Celtic have obviously identified that he’s good value. I think it’s a £300,000 compensation package because it’s a cross-border.

“All of a sudden you have a talent on your hands. If Aribo comes to Rangers, does well, within a couple of years he could be worth four, five, six million.”

Can Aribo earn that kind of reputation at Ibrox?

The Scottish Premiership is an improving league that, with competition from Rangers and the arrival of Steven Gerrard last season, attracted plenty of interest.

With players like Moussa Dembele leaving for Lyon last summer and Kieran Tierney linked with Arsenal in recent days, it’s clearly a division that Europe’s big clubs are keeping an eye on.

There’s no reason to think that if Aribo does well he can’t become a multi-million pound asset for the Gers, especially if he proves to be the goalscoring, box-to-box talent that Gerrard has painted him as.

Marco Asensio can offer Klopp a more creative option in comparison to Sadio Mane

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

According to Spanish outlet Eldesmarque, Liverpool are prepared to ‘throw the house out the window’ in order to bring Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio to Anfield.

The report states that Jurgen Klopp sees the Spain international as the ‘ideal complement’ to Liverpool’s current attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Incidentally, it is Mane who currently occupies the left-wing position where Asensio featured 15 times for Los Blancos last term – the left side of attack appears to be Asensio’s favoured position seeing as he recorded most of his goal involvements there in 2018/19.

“It reminds me of a bus seat!” – Watch a damning verdict on Chelsea’s new kit in the video below…

Klopp wouldn’t even consider dropping Mane for any player in world football right now, one would assume. The Senegal international hit 22 league goals last season, winning the Premier league Golden Boot as a result, and it can easily be argued that he is one of Europe’s deadliest forwards right now.

However, Asensio could offer Klopp something different in the position if he signed for the Reds.

The 23-year-old appears to be far more creative than the former Southampton man, who seems to be much more direct and focused on scoring rather than creating.

Asensio recorded four times the amount of Mane’s assist tally from last term, setting up four strikes compared to the 27-year-old’s one.

The Real Madrid No.20 also sent in more crosses than Mane did, whilst he also has almost a whole shot less than the Liverpool No.10 on average per game – his pass success rate is also significantly higher than Mane’s.

There is nothing wrong with Mane being more direct, it is what makes him one of the most lethal players in Europe.

However, if Klopp ever needed a more creative figure out on the left flank for whatever reason, Asensio seems like the perfect alternative to the vastly contrasting figure of the Senegalese star.

Liverpool should hang on to Nathaniel Clyne this summer despite receiving offers

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have received offers for right-back Nathaniel Clyne but the defender’s future is far from certain as he is yet to reveal where he’d like to play his football next season.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Reds had originally loaned Clyne out back in January, where the full-back made the switch to Bournemouth.

The 28-year-old made 14 league appearances whilst on loan with the Cherries, but no talk of a permanent switch to the Vitality Stadium has come up despite Eddie Howe’s side being one of the teams linked with a deal – Clyne’s former side Crystal Palace as well as West Ham have been linked.

“It reminds me of a bus seat!” – Watch a damning verdict on Chelsea’s new kit in the video below…

The 5 foot 9 ace is now in the last year of his contract at Anfield, but as the Merseysiders have shown with Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge, they are not afraid to lose players for nothing if they still have worth to Jurgen Klopp.

Michael Edwards cannot repeat January mistake

Clyne was allowed to leave back in January on loan, but it can be argued that it was an exit that cost Liverpool.

Just days after he went, first-choice right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a knee injury and Klopp was left with no other option but to shove James Milner in the position for the next month.

The former Aston Villa man cannot solely be blamed for the disappointing results that followed, but he was definitely involved to some extent.

Liverpool drew back-to-back games against Leicester and West Ham after a nervy 4-3 win against Crystal Palace, in which Milner was sent off for two bookable offences.

As a result, Jordan Henderson was forced to play at right-back against the Foxes, before Milner came back in for the trip to the London Stadium – it was strikingly evident that the Reds missed a natural presence in the position.

Those two draws didn’t seem costly at the time, but Liverpool finished just a single point behind Manchester City in the title race – had they won either of those games against Leicester and West Ham, they may have been champions.

Sporting Director Michael Edwards simply can’t allow the Reds to find themselves in such a difficult position again next season if they want to be challenging for the title, especially not with the depth City have.
